Punto Banco is a card game in which the player tries to guess which of two hands (Punto or Banco) wins, or whether the outcome is a tie (Égalité). Both hands are dealt 2–3 cards according to the table shown below. The winner is the hand whose combined score is closer to nine. Face cards and the ten count as zero points, the ace counts as one point, and the other cards count for their natural value. The values of the cards are added up and, if the value of the hand is ten or higher, the value is determined by the final digit. The game is played with six 52 card decks without jokers.
The course of the game
Players place their bets on Punto, Banco and/or Égalité. After the bets have been placed, the dealer or player whose turn it is to deal the cards deals two cards face-up to both Punto and Banco, in the following order:
First card to Punto
Second card to Banco
Third card to Punto
Fourth card to Banco
Third cards, if any, are then dealt according to the table shown below.
When all of the cards have been dealt, the dealer announces the values of the Punto’s and Banco’s hands.
If the values of the hands are equal, the outcome is a tie and bets placed on Égalité win at a payout rate of 8:1, while bets placed on Punto and Banco neither win nor lose.
If the Banco has the better hand, bets placed on Banco win at a payout rate of 1:1, except when the Banco wins with a score of 6, in which case bets placed on Banco win at a payout rate of 55:100. Other bets lose.
If the Punto has the better hand, bets placed on Punto win at a payout rate of 1:1. Other bets lose.
The table according to which cards are drawn:
If the Punto’s score after two cards is
0–5 another card is drawn
6, 7 stay
8, 9 stay, no additional cards drawn for Banco
If the Banco’s score after two cards is
0–2 another card is drawn
3 draw, unless the Punto’s third card has a value of 8
4 draw, if the Punto’s third card has a value of 2–7
5 draw, if the Punto’s third card has a value of 4–7
6 draw, if the Punto’s third card has a value of 6 or 7
8, 9 stay, no additional cards drawn for Punto
If the Punto has a score of 6 or 7 points after the initial draw, a third card is drawn for Banco if the Banco’s score is 5 or lower.
